For a long-lasting solution to missing teeth, consider implant retained dentures.
Implant retained dentures are a cost-effective way to replace missing teeth and effectively restore both your smile and your confidence. They will also improve your ability to chew without fear of your dentures sliding out of place.
What are implant retained dentures?
In contrast to traditional dentures, which are secured by an adhesive and can be removed from the mouth, implant retained dentures are fixed in place surgically. They are therefore much more robust and durable. Implant retained dentures offer a more permanent and hassle-free solution to missing teeth. You’ll be able to enjoy your life without worrying about your dentures sliding around your mouth.
How are they fitted?
You will need to have a sufficient jawbone to get implant retained dentures. If your jawbone is too soft or not thick enough, it won’t be able to support the dental implants necessary to hold your dentures. When your suitability for implant retained dentures has been determined, you will need to undergo a short surgical procedure. A series of implants will be secured within your jawbone. Once these have healed (this will take approximately 3-6 months), your dentist will take a scan of your mouth to make sure your bespoke dentures are crafted to fit you perfectly. When they have been made, your dentures can simply be clipped into the implants in your jawbone.
As long as you continue to practise good oral hygiene, your implants could last for decades and they might even be the only set of dentures you ever need.
Does it hurt to fit implant retained dentures?
Implants are fitted under local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure. As with any surgical procedure, you may experience some mild discomfort during the recovery process. This can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication if necessary.
Following the procedure, eating a balanced diet of soft, nutritious food, rinsing your mouth with salt water and resting as much as possible is advised. As your bone fuses around your implants, it is best to disturb them as little as possible to aid the healing process. Until your implants have healed fully and your dentures have been fitted, you should avoid hard or chewy foods such as raw vegetables and toffee.
