Dental Sedation
No matter where it comes from, fear of the dentist can make it difficult to attend routine dental appointments. There are many obvious downsides to avoiding necessary treatments, from struggling to eat comfortably to living every day in pain. With dental sedation, we can make your time in the dentist’s chair relaxed, comfortable and pain-free.

What Is Dental Sedation?
Sedation refers to the use of medication to help patients relax during treatment. It can be used to make any procedure much more tolerable and comes in various strengths.
The levels of sedation include:
- Minimal sedation — you’ll be awake but relaxed
- Moderate sedation — you may slur your words and not remember much of the procedure
- Deep sedation — you’ll be on the edge of consciousness, but can still be woken
- General anaesthesia — you’ll be completely unconscious
Dental Sedation at Aurora
The most common types offered by dentists that use sedation are IV sedation, oral sedation, and laughing gas. At Aurora, we use IV sedation, which means that sedatives will be administered intravenously. Unlike deeper forms of sedation, IV sedation will not put you into an unconscious state.
You will still be able to respond to certain commands or instructions, without being completely aware of what is happening. You may not remember much of your treatment, but your anxiety levels will be significantly reduced.
Who Might Benefit from Seeing a Sedation Dentist?
Dental sedation isn’t suitable for everyone. However, it could be recommended for those who have:
- Dental anxiety
- An overly sensitive gag reflex
- Extremely sensitive teeth
- Difficulty controlling movements in the dentist’s chair
How We Use Sedation
During your initial consultation with our treatment coordinator, you will be asked a series of questions about your medical history and your dental preferences. If you are nervous about undergoing treatment, you may be eligible for dental sedation. Although we often see this as a last resort and may suggest alternatives such as self-hypnosis or the use of positive affirmations, sedation will be offered if we believe it will be beneficial to you.
Our specialist sedation Dentist, Dr. Carl Lazzari, is also the co-founder of Aurora Dental and has many years of experience in the practice of IV sedation. He is well-known for his friendly, professional and relaxed approach to treatment, with patients coming from far and wide to enjoy treatment at our award-winning Wiltshire-based clinics.
What Happens After You’ve Visited a Sedation Dentist?
After you’ve had sedation and finished your treatment, your dentist will wait to ensure you feel fully recovered before discharging you. It is recommended that you avoid driving for 24 hours after sedation, so you should arrange for someone to pick you up and take you home.
You can discuss any concerns or questions you have with a member of our expert team.
