Dentophobia, which is the name given to having a fear of the dentist, is completely normal. It can manifest in many different ways, from just feeling slightly nervous about an appointment to experiencing dread at the mere thought of booking in.
At Aurora Dental, we understand that visiting the dentist can be a challenging experience for anyone. Because of this, we go the extra mile to make sure that all of our patients feel comfortable, relaxed and at home whenever they walk through our doors.
Read on below to find out why you should NOT be scared of the dentist.
To minimise anxiety, we focus on open clinic-patient communication from minute one. This means that we can be contacted via various channels, including WhatsApp, and will always make time to answer any questions you may have about your treatment.
It’s our aim to ensure that you feel listened to at all points of your treatment journey and that you have an understanding of what will happen during your appointments. Information will be shared with you as part of your initial consultation with one of our treatment coordinators and in the form of emails and leaflets. Your treatment coordinator will remain with you at every stage and will be on hand to discuss all treatment options and concerns in detail.
Even though our clinics are friendly, welcoming environments, we are well aware that some people may find it hard to visit us in person. For this reason, we offer complimentary virtual consultations to all new patients. This allows you to get to know us before coming in for an appointment and will give you the opportunity to ask any questions before treatment commences.
Once you feel confident enough to attend the clinic for an appointment, you will be able to schedule a longer treatment. This will enable to you ask for a break from treatment when you feel it necessary. We also offer early morning treatments and monitor waiting times to make sure you do not have to wait too long to be seen.
In addition to being knowledgeable professionals, all of our staff have been trained to recognise the signs of anxiety. Should you feel particularly anxious, the member of staff conducting your treatment will be able to offer reassurance and guide you safely through your appointment.
As each patient is unique, we will also do what we can to make your time with us as relaxing as possible. This may involve playing calming music, encouraging breathing techniques or advising the use of noise-cancelling headphones throughout your treatment.
Sometimes, there will be no “cure” for dental anxiety. In cases where patients may be overly nervous but need to undergo treatment, we offer Sedation. Sedation is only advised in extreme cases and we will always do our best to help people through appointments without it.
State-of-the-art pain relief is also available to minimise the discomfort of certain procedures. Its use will be discussed with you during your initial consultation.
All of our staff go above and beyond to help patients smile more and live better. To book in at one of our Wiltshire-based clinics, visit our website today.Back to News
