What Causes Receding Gums?

Receding gums are a common dental problem that affects many people, and isn’t something that should be ignored. Although receding gums cannot be reversed, there are treatment options available to help repair the gum and stop it from getting worse. In this article, Aurora Dental discuss what causes receding gums, how it’s diagnosed, and the available treatments.

What is Gum Recession?

Gum recession is when your gum tissue draws back from your tooth, exposing the root underneath.

The first sign is often sensitivity, however, you may also notice that the tooth looks longer than normal or feel a ridge where the gum and tooth meet.

When gum recession occurs, small pockets or gaps form between the tooth and gum line. This makes it easy for bacteria to build up, and if left untreated, the supporting tissue and bone structures can become damaged, which could ultimately lead to tooth loss.

What Are the Main Causes of Receding Gums?

Receding gums can be caused by a range of factors, including:

  • Poor oral health
  • Ageing
  • Brushing too hard
  • Smoking
  • Genetics
  • Hardened plaque build-up

Who Does Receding Gums Affect?

Receding gums can affect anyone, however, you’re more likely to develop it if you:

  • Are over the age of 65
  • Have periodontal disease
  • Had braces or other orthodontic treatment
  • Smoke or chew tobacco
  • Have had trauma or injury to your gum tissue

How are Receding Gums Diagnosed?

Your dentist will diagnose gum recession during a routine oral exam. A probe may be used to measure the gum pockets, which can help determine whether or not you have gum recession. Normal pocket sizes are around 1 to 3 millimetres, so anything larger could be a sign of gum disease.

Treatments for Receding Gums

If you suspect your gums are receding, it’s important that you speak to your dentist as soon as possible. Your dentist will be able to identify the cause of the receding gums and advise on the best treatment option. The correct treatment will largely depend on what is causing your gum recession.

Mild cases of the condition can be treated with non-surgical options, however, if your case is more severe it may require a more invasive treatment. Non-surgical treatments might include:

  • Topical antibiotics
  • Composite bonding
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Antimicrobial mouthwash

In some cases, gum graft surgery might be recommended. During this surgery, a gum graft is used to replace missing gum tissue. Once in the correct position, it will be stitched into place by a gum specialist.

Complications of Receding Gums

Periodontal diseases like receding gums are a frequent cause of adult tooth loss. When there isn’t enough gum tissue to hold the tooth root in place, the teeth become vulnerable to falling out. Sometimes, multiple loose teeth might be removed by your dentist before they fall out.

Preventing Receding Gums

Gum recession cannot always be prevented, however, you can significantly reduce the risk by practising proper oral care, including:

  • Brushing your teeth thoroughly twice a day
  • Using mouthwash
  • Visiting your dentist regularly, and following their advice on oral care
  • Using a soft bristled toothbrush

Treating Sensitivity Caused by Gum Recession

As previously mentioned, one of the most common symptoms associated with receding gums is sensitivity. This is because tooth roots are no longer covered with protective enamel. Your dentist can apply a fluoride varnish to help reduce pain associated with receding gums, and a desensitising toothpaste can be used at home.
