If you’re about to leave school and wondering what direction to take, a career in dentistry could offer the perfect mix of science, care and hands-on skills.
At Aurora Dental, we’re passionate about nurturing the next generation of dental professionals and showing young people that dentistry isn’t just about becoming a dentist, it’s a dynamic field with many exciting opportunities, including apprenticeships and on-the-job training.
Why Dentistry?
Dentistry offers far more than most people realise. It’s a career that allows you to make a real difference in people’s lives whether that’s relieving pain, helping someone regain their confidence with a new smile, or simply educating them on good oral hygiene.
If you enjoy working in a team, care about helping people, and want a practical role with great long-term prospects, dentistry could be the right fit for you. And the best part? You don’t need a university degree to get started.
Entry-Level Dental Careers
Here are some of the career paths you can pursue in dentistry straight after school:
1. Dental Nurse
One of the most popular starting points is becoming a dental nurse. Dental nurses support dentists during treatments, look after patients, and ensure everything runs smoothly in the surgery. You can begin as an apprentice dental nurse, earning while you learn, and work towards a Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing.
At Aurora Dental, we regularly support trainee nurses who join our team with little or no experience and work their way up through nationally recognised apprenticeships.
2. Dental Receptionist or Patient Care Coordinator
If you have strong communication and organisational skills, working as a dental receptionist or patient care coordinator might be ideal. You’ll be the first point of contact for patients, booking appointments and supporting the clinical team. These roles offer excellent training opportunities and a pathway into other areas of the clinic.
3. Apprenticeships in Dentistry
A dental apprenticeship is a fantastic option if you’re eager to learn and start earning straight away. Apprenticeships offer a structured pathway where you gain qualifications while getting real-life experience. You’ll learn everything from cross-infection control to chair-side assistance and patient care.
Many of our own team members at Aurora Dental began as apprentices and have since progressed into senior roles.
Long-Term Career Development
Starting as a dental nurse or apprentice opens up further options such as becoming a dental hygienist, therapist, or even studying to become a dentist in the future.
The dental field rewards dedication, and with continuous learning and development, your career can grow with you.
