Because not every tooth twinge means you need to sprint to the dentist – but some definitely do.
There’s nothing like a sudden toothache to throw off your day (or night). But how do you know when it’s a true dental emergency… and when it can wait until Monday?
Let’s break it down with no scary dentist jargon, just real advice from your local Wiltshire dental team.
First things first: What is a dental emergency?
If you’re in severe pain, bleeding heavily, or have suffered trauma to your teeth, face or mouth, that’s when you need to see a dentist urgently.
Here’s what definitely counts as a dental emergency:
- A tooth that’s been knocked out
- Swelling in the face or jaw that’s getting worse
- Bleeding that won’t stop
- An abscess or infection (often with pain, swelling or a bad taste)
- A cracked or broken tooth causing sharp pain
- Sudden, intense toothache that’s interfering with eating, sleeping, or speaking
If any of these sound like what you’re experiencing, call us right away. Our clinics in Corsham, Chippenham, Swindon and Devizes offer same-day emergency appointments wherever possible.
And what’s not quite an emergency?
Some things feel alarming in the moment, but don’t require immediate care:
- A dull, manageable toothache
- A chipped tooth that isn’t painful
- A lost filling or crown (if it’s not hurting)
- Bleeding gums when brushing
- Sensitivity to hot or cold drinks
- Food stuck between teeth (annoying, yes but not dangerous)
Still unsure? Don’t worry, just give us a ring and we’ll help you figure it out.
What to do while you wait:
Lost a tooth? Rinse it gently (don’t scrub), try placing it back in the socket, or store it in milk. Then head to us quickly.
In pain? Take over-the-counter painkillers (as directed), apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek and avoid chewing on that side.
Outside clinic hours? Call NHS 111 for urgent dental advice or assistance when our practices are closed. They’ll help you get the right care if it’s out of hours.
